Viljelijöiden näkemyksiä erikoiskasviviljelystä

Abstract

Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää: 1) erikoiskasviviljelijän tunnuspiirteitä, 2) tekijöitä, jotka ovat vaikuttaneet viljelyn aloittamiseen, sekä 3) viljelijöiden näkemyksiä erikoiskasviviljelystä. Tutkimuksessa sovellettiin innovaation omaksumiseen liittyviä teorioita. Tutkimusaineisto kerättiin internetissä toteutetulla kyselyllä, ja se koostui 1020 vastauksesta. Vastaajista 23 prosentilla oli kokemusta erikoiskasvien viljelystä. Sen sijaan 58 prosenttia ei ollut viljellyt erikoiskasveja, mutta ryhmästä merkittävä osa oli ainakin jonkin verran kiinnostunut erikoiskasviviljelystä. Vain 19 prosenttia vastaajista ei tuntenut lainkaan mielenkiintoa erikoiskasvien viljelyä kohtaan. Tutkimus osoitti, että erikoiskasviviljelijät ovat yleensä hieman keskimääräistä korkeammin koulutettuja ja pääsääntöisesti kasvinviljelijöitä. Heidän joukossaan on myös keskimäärin enemmän luomuviljelijöitä sekä niitä, joiden kotitalouden tuloista pääosa tulee maa- ja metsätalouden ulkopuolelta. Innovaation omaksujat ja siitä erittäin kiinnostuneet suunnittelevat keskimääräistä useammin tilan tuotannon laajentamista tai merkittävää muutosta lähiaikoina. Erikoiskasviviljelijöillä on kyselyn perusteella muita viljelijöitä enemmän kokemusta myös muiden kuin niin sanottujen tavanomaisten viljakasvien viljelystä. Erikoiskasviviljely näyttäisi siten sopivan viljelijälle, joka on innostunut kokeilemaan uusia viljelykasveja, etsimään vaihtelua tilan toimintaan ja tavoittelemaan tilalle tunnettuutta. Tutkimuksessa mukana olleista 13 erikoiskasvista viljelijöille tutuimpia olivat kumina, tattari, öljypellava, kuitupellava ja härkäpapu. Erikoiskasviviljelyinnovaation omaksumisen taustalla näyttäisi olevan ensisijaisesti taloudellisia tekijöitä. Myös ympäristötekijöillä ja viljelijöiden henkilökohtaisilla ominaisuuksilla on kuitenkin merkitystä aloittamispäätöstä tehtäessä. Erikoiskasviviljelystä oltiin kaiken kaikkiaan hyvin kiinnostuneita. Uskottavien tuotanto- ja markkinointiketjujen rakentaminen ja sopivat aktivointitoimet, kuten taloudelliset kannustimet ja tiedottaminen, toisivatkin mitä ilmeisimmin erikoiskasveille uusia viljelijöitä.

The objective of this study was to characterize the adopters of the cultivation of special crops, 2) identify factors that affect the adoptation and 3) exmine farmers attitudes to the special crop production. The data was collected by a survey, which was carried out in the Internet. The results were analyzed in the framework of innovation theory. About 23 % has cultivated special crops. Majority of the all respondents had not cultivated special crops yet, but 58 % of them expressed in some degree interest towards the special crops. Only 19 % of respondents considered the production of special crops at their farm would be out of question. The study revealed that those, who had adopted the cultivation of special crops, had a higher education than the farmers in average average. In this group there were also less cattle farmers and more crop producers and probably due to this, the innovation adopters had often had more diverse crop production on their farms than in the average. Earlier experiments with new crops may decrease the threshold for the cultivation of new crops. Innovation adopters emphasized the importance of their personal tendency to apply new crops and farming practices. On the other hand, they considered economic profit as a less important factor for the decisions concerning the crop species than the other farmers did. It general, the farmers considered that the cultivation of special crops might have positive effect on the image of farms on the viewpoint of consumers of agricultural products. The innovation adopters and those, who were highly interested in the cultivation of special plants, thought that markets for special crops would develop positively. All the respondents estimated that both cooperation with the refining industry and delivery of the information have to be improved to promote the success of special crops.
