Tiivistelmä
The goal of this study was to classify the factors, that determine the success of dairy farms. The aim was to create example farms, that would represent farm enterprises whose economic activity has been successful or, alternatively, less successful. The classification was made by comparing the technical efficiency of dairy farms by using solvency, profitability and liquidity as requirements. Also the milk production costs in the farms were used to find out if there are common factors, that explain why some farms belong to the best succeeding group and the others in the least succeeding group. The empirical analysis was made by data collected from 274 book-keeping dairy farms in Finland. These farms belong to the support area A - C2. The farms were divided into three groups according to the number of dairy cows. Each of these three groups was divided into the success groups according to the technical efficiency of the farms. The results show that the farms that belong to the economicly least succeeding group had higher variable and fixed cost in every respect than the farms in the best succeeding group, regardless of the number of dairy cows. The difference was not statistically significant but it was sufficient to raise the milk production cost FIM 0.06-0.81 higher per litre in the least succeeding enteprises, depending on the number of dairy cows.
